February 2010: Finding a REALTOR®

Come in and have a seat while I share my thoughts with you each month on the business of Real Estate.  You will find some of my views are very traditional, as fits my personality, but one does not achieve success in any vocation without the willingness to change and adapt to market conditions.

This month I would like to share with you the trials and tribulations of finding a reputable REALTOR® one that is willing to take the time and devote the energy to make your dreams a reality. In this age of instant everything we sometimes forget that fast is not always the best answer; this is especially true of the person who in all likelihood will be assisting you in making the biggest investment of your life. Take your time in your search, in the end it will be worth it as you will be relying on this person not just once but for many times in the years to come as you build a lifetime relationship.

So, how do you determine if the REALTOR® you interview is the right one? Firstly, make sure you interview several agents to see what each has to offer. You are going to be working with him/her very closely and you want to make sure they fit your personality. Here are some basic questions, by no means are they the only ones to ask but it establishes a good starting point.

• What experience do they have?
• How well do they know the market?
• Do they personally own real estate and/or investment properties?
• Are they willing to give you the names of past clients as references?
• Are they a full time REALTOR®?
• Are they technology savvy?
• How do they communicate with their clients?
• Do they understand the current market conditions?
• Do they listen attentively and instil confidence?                                                                   

Bottom line is to trust your instincts, you need to be comfortable with the person you choose, enjoy their company and respect their ability.
